Theo, The Dark Knight
We found some amazing fancy dress costumes in Marks and Spencer the other day. Luckily for the boys, they started at 3 year old size otherwise, we would have picked up the lot! That didn't stop us trying out the following on Theo. Rather fetching I think....

Christmas at Team Burchell
Christmas day at Team Burchell!
The day started with a 'semi' lie-in to 07:30 (methinks we won't be getting away with this as they get older and start to get excited at looking forward to Christmas morning!). After breakfast, the boys (with a little help from Mum and Dad) opened their presents. These included lots of toys, books etc. and (our fave present) a MASSIVE hippo bean bag!
The boys then got themselves into their Christmas outfits and we drove over to Aunty and Uncle's house for the day.
We normally feed the boys about midday on a normal day and if we're a bit late, they don't hold back with letting us know they're hungry. So, we gave them a little sandwich when we got there so they would hold out until Christmas dinner. When dinner was served, the boys did us proud with eating up all (well, apart from the odd bits that were thrown to the floor) their carrots, peas, brussell sprouts, turkey and parsnips. Good lads!
An afternoon of playing with their toys, grabbing decorations off Aunty's 'less than baby safe' Christmas tree, cuddles and play with other family members and it was time to leave to head home for bath and bed time.
A tired and exhausted Mum and Dad then collapsed on the sofa to catch up on the days TV.
Here's a selection of snaps from the day.

A Happy Harrods Christmas!
We went out for the day on saturday to our favourite store - Harrods. Are we mad! The last Saturday before Christmas and we're plodding round one of the biggest and busiest department stores in the world! However, we actually had a fab day out.
A lot of people think Harrods is just a posh expensive department store full of tourists and whilst they're partially right about the tourists (at certain times of the year) you can actually pick up some fantastic bargains and it's nice to be in a store where the staff can never seem to do enough to help you. Plus, you seem to be able to buy absolutely anything you could possibly desire!
Anyway, we started off in the toy department and picked up a few last minute pressies for the boys. Right beside here is Santa's Grotto and would you believe it, they had some spare tickets! Never ones to miss out on a photo opportunity, we had to go and visit the big man.

Next, we stopped for some lunch. The boys had pasta and broccoli, which actually rated fairly highly in our league table of 'places to take the boys to eat'. Decent high chairs too. After that, the boys had a nap, whilst we wandered round the Sound and Vision department.

A few more departments later (including a wander through the food hall where we bumped into The Cheeky Girls) and we needed another break. By now, it was about time for afternoon tea so we went to one of the restaurants for a cup of tea and a scone - Yum! Even the boys enjoyed the scones!

The boys had clearly grown bored of sitting in their pram now so we thought it was about time to go home. A short drive, an hour or so of running and crawling round the house and it was time for dinner and in bed by 7pm.
Night boys! Not long till Santa's going to be here!

Hot Charlie
We had to take Charlie to the Emergency Doctors last Saturday. He'd had a temperature the night before and he was really drowsy during the morning. It turned out he had an ear infection.
However, what we especially enjoyed was the 1½ hour wait in a waiting room filled with multiple other sick children coughing their guts up. Luckily though, the doctors had supplied some toys from the dark ages for the boys to play with. You could practically scrape the germs off them with a spoon...

Seeing Double! - The Twins Club Christmas Party
We went to our local Twins Club Christmas Party this week.
The boys joined the other 10 - 15 sets of twins that go along for 2 hours of playing, eating party food and (to top it all off) have a visit from Father Christmas!
We first joined the Twins Club at the Christmas party last year (and to be honest, have rarely been since then!) but it was fun to see all the newborns there whilst our two were toddling and crawling around playing with all the toys.

Christmas Tree Update
Well, our Christmas tree is looking incredibly bare on the lower branches. EVERY decoration is now on the upper half of the tree - out of the reach of grabbing hands!
Not only that but we've now started to put presents under the tree. Oh what fun the boys have had pulling those presents through the bars of the playpen whilst our backs have been turned!

We have a second walker!
It looks like Charlie is on his way to vertical forward motion! He's only really able to take one or two steps but he's also a lot more comfortable standing unattended too.
Is this the start of REAL trouble in the Burchell household? The boys walking this way and that? We think so!

The Christmas Tree!
Team Burchell Christmas Tree is up!
Here's a picture of it before we had to move all the decorations to the upper branches. The boys found the 'hanging toys' far too tempting and hence spent the first few hours picking all the decorations off they could reach. Charlie then found it absolutely hilarious to grab and pull at the wire for the lights sticking out the bottom right hand side.
Luckily, there's no chance of them either pulling the tree over (it's in a huge and very stable base) or getting behing the 'half' play pen that surrounds it (it's tied up with string to the radiator behind the tree!). However, it does look like we're going to be stuck with a very bare lower half to our tree this year.
Oh well, all part of the magic of Christmas I suppose.....

Car Park Wars
Picture the scene. Sainsbury's car park late on a Sunday morning. Trying to find a parent and toddler space when someone pulls in to the last remaining one just in front of me:
Me - "Excuse me, but I don't see any children in your car"
Him - "What are you, a f***ing copper?"
Me - "No, but I've got two babies in here and I would appreciate the extra space"
Him - [lot's of hand gestures, car goes into reverse, a bit more swearing, reverses out of the space]
Me - [calmly pulls into the space, a nice smile towards him]
Him - [a few more hand gestures, a bit more swearing as he speeds off]
Any wonder we do our food shopping on line most of time?

The evening without Mummy and Daddy went superbly well - full marks to Nanny and Grampy!

We Get The Point...
The boys latest trick seems to be to point at everything! Each point is accompanied by a 'goo?' or a 'gaah?' as if to say 'what's that?'. Sometimes, they don't even seem to point at anything in particular!

Dinner and Bedtime - no Mummy, no Daddy
This Saturday is going to be a first for us.
It's the first time we'll have gone out BEFORE the boys have had their dinner and gone to bed. That means, we won't be there for dinner time, bath time, story time or bed time! Relax, we're not leaving them to get on with it themselves, rather Nanny and Grampy will be assuming this role whilst we go out for the evening.
Will report back on Sunday to let you know how they got on.

The Great Christmas Tree Debate
No, not whether we get a real tree or a fake one (real all the way in this household!) but more around how we stop the boys from pulling the thing over the minute it's all decorated!
We think we've found the solution - The Playpen!
It's meant getting another stair gate (that's five in total now) to separate off the play room, but it means we can now use the playpen to go round the Christmas tree! As you can imagine, the playpen is supersized anyway to accomodate twins so it's more than adequate for a real tree. Added to that a bit of string to hold it in place on the off chance they manage to grab a stray branch and I think we'll be sorted.
Photos of our caged tree will be up next week.

Pizza Gemelli!
As the boys grow older and their feeding times become more flexible, we're always on the look out for good places to take the boys for dinner. Our latest destination this weekend was Pizza Express!
They've really geared themselves up for children with a proper and reasonably priced children's menu, colouring books, paper hats and good high chairs. Plus, in these tough financial times, the current 2 for 1 Pizza voucher makes the whole trip more affordable. Here's a couple of the traditional embarassing pictures we take for the boys to enjoy as they grow up!

Ear We Go...
Nightmare illness time in the Burchell household this week.
First, Charlie scared us all with a temperature of 40.5 deg Celcius, almost prompting a trip to A&E but averted by a call to NHS direct (pretty useless I might add) and the local out of hours Doctor (much more helpful). We had been to see our Doctor earlier in the day and she'd found that he had an ear infection which was probably contributing towards the temperature.
Secondly, and entirely expected, Theo comes down with a high temperature too. Not quite reaching the same dizzy heights but worrying nonetheless.
And finally, us poor exhausted parents have also come down with yet another cold each!

Bedtime Stories
We've started reading the boys a story before bedtime. We've been alternating between one of the Beatrix Potter books (Clair has the 'boxset' from her childhood) and one of the Mr Men books (another boxset but a gift from Grandma for the boys first birthday).
It does seem to help settle them down in the evening and to be honest, we're quite enjoying reminiscing with some of our childhood stories!

Gymboree!
We started a new class with the boys today. Gymboree!
This class is all about singing, dancing and playing instruments with your baby (we got to play the triangle!) - plus getting them to interact and respond to all kinds of different stimulation. They have a whole room full of soft play mats, slides, climbing frames etc.
The two instructors that took the course had to be the most energetic people I have ever met. There were about 10 babies in the class and it was non stop for about 45 minutes. I'm not sure who was more worn out afterwards - the boys or us! When we learned that she normally does six classese a day AND she has a 15 month old baby, we felt quite ashamed!
Anyway, the class was brilliant, easily the best that we've done (and there are loads of different types of classes out there) so we think we'll be doing this every week. The boys seemed to really enjoy it and, as they do a class on a Saturday morning, it's perfect for both of us to go to!

I CAN do it myself!
Theo and Charlie seem very determined to feed themselves as much as possible at the moment.
They don't yet have the co-ordination skills to get every spoonful in their mouths so most of it just ends up down their bibs or on the floor. They will let us feed them, but only if they have their own spoon - which inevitably they just bang on their high chairs or slap in and out of the bowl! Often it's easier to give them finger food.
Of the two of them, Charlie is slightly better at self feeding. Here's a couple of pics....

Shoes Part 2
We went shopping for the boys second pair of shoes at the weekend. If you remember, we posted about two months ago when we bought their first pair - erm, excuse me? TWO MONTHS!!! Is that how long we can expect a pair of shoes to last? :-)

Now that Theo is walking, he gets to have proper hard soles (these were the ones we bought). Seeing him toddle around in them was hilarious.
Unfortunately, (or should that be fortunately?) Charlie's feet have grown to exactly the same size as Theo's feet were two months ago. So guess what, he gets hand-me-downs already!

Charlie the Gadget Geek
Charlie seems to have an obsession with all things gadgety!
If there is a remote control within reach, he'll go for it. If he can get near to the Playstation or Sky box, he'll be there. If you're on your laptop in the lounge, he'll be trying to hit the F1 key from behind the display!

Wedding Cake, Christening Cake, Birthday Cake
Talk about a cake for multiple purposes!
We've FINALLY disposed of the top tier of our wedding cake (from almost 7 years ago), which was also redecorated as the boys' christening cake (from March this year) and which we finally cut during the first birthday party we had for the boys the other week!
Unsurprisingly, few people were willing to taste it....

Ride 'em Cowboy!
As you will have seen from previous pics, we bought the boys a rocking horse each for their first birthday. Well, Theo has now learnt how to get himself up onto one of the horses unaided.
Carrots the Donkey (in the background), being a few inches taller than Gulliver, is still too much of a challenge!

Walking Update
Theo is now more than capable of getting himself into an upright position and taking a few steps completely unaided. It's really amazing to see how he's moving on.
Charlie meanwhile, whilst a lot more comfortable on his feet, still doesn't have the strength in his legs to stand up without holding on.
What's also changed recently is that Theo now always wants to be put down onto his feet. Where as before it would be quite normal to put them down on the floor into a sitting position, now his legs are out and he just wants to stand!

Colds
The boys have been suffering the last few weeks. Colds, coughs. sniffles and runny noses have been the order of the day in the Burchell house - each of us kindly sharing our relative bugs back and forth between each other.
I'm sure this is fairly typical of colder days with babies but it is tiring when you're up several times each in the night, frantically trying to find the medicine spoon in semi-darkness.
Medised, Calpol and Tixylix are constantly on the shopping list!

Toy Mountain
Our routine used to be straightforward. Put the boys to bed, come downstairs, clear up the lounge of their toys and playmat and have dinner. Since their birthday though, things have somewhat changed!
No longer does the odd nice soft rattle or a book seem to suffice as a form of entertainment. Now we have Mega Blox, rocking horses, toy cars, shape sorters etc. All of which seem to make a great deal more mess!
The evening lounge clear-up now takes about three times as long as it used to - partly due to the quantity but also because of the extra care needed when picking something up that could go 'boing' or 'beep beep' or sing a nursery rhyme at the slightest mis-grip. Also, where as before we used to 'de-toy' the lounge completely, now the odd brick or plastic shape inevitably remains.
Is this the start of the 'toy takeover' that seems to happen to every parent's house?

Boys and Their Toys
This picture was either taken in our nearest Gap store or its the boys' in our living room opening some of their presents on their birthday. Note the two rocking horses in the background (a present from Mummy and Daddy) - that's Gulliver the Horse on the left (he neighs when you press his ear) and Carrots the Donkey on the right (he munches on his carrot when you hold it to his mouth).
Jabs - Round 3
We took the boys to the doctors today for their latest round of jabs. It's been 8 months since the last lot and this was just a booster of some of the ones they received back in February.
Time will tell whether this helps them sleep better tonight (PLEASE!!!!!) or means they'll be even more ratty than they have been recently (NOOOO!!!)

Theo is Walking
It may only be a step or two but I think we can definitely say that Theo is walking! He's started to take those first few dodgy steps, followed by a fall onto his bum (or a face plant if we don't manage to catch him quick enough!)
Looks like there will be no stopping him now.....not too literally I hope.
As such, it looks like the poll on who is going to walk first has to close. With a 50% split on the votes, it looks like half of you were right and half were wrong!

Bad Dad
Daddy has inflicted pain on his poor little boy, Charlie.
Daddy accidentally caught Charlie's left hand little finger in the door to the playroom whilst Mummy was out. Poor Charlie let out a scream so loud that I'm surprised social services weren't at the door within minutes.
With little spots of blood dripping from his squashed finger all over the floor, Daddy dialled 999, asked for an ambulance and within no more than 5 minutes, a paramedic was at the door. In that 5 minutes, Mummy returned home, restored calm to the chaos, let the Paramedic examine Charlie and accompanied him to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Daddy stayed at home and looked after Theo - none the wiser to the chaos around him -fed him and put him to bed.
Luckily, Charlie's finger was just badly cut and bruised. No broken bones. He and Mummy returned home about two hours later with his finger in a bandage. A little dose of Calpol before bed and not much longer later, Charlie was asleep.
He doesn't seem to be in any pain - let's just hope he doesn't end up with some kind of door phobia.....

First Birthday Fever!
We've stayed in touch with all the people we met at the Ante Natal classes we attended before the boys were born.
Which now means we have a whole host of first birthday parties to attend and celebrate over the coming few weeks!

Water Babies Term 2 Finished!
We've just finished the second term of swimming! Highlights from this term included:
Learning to fall into the water without the 'Ready, Go!' prompt
Longer swims underwater
Learning to swim up and hold on to the edge of the pool
The 'wibble wobble, jelly on a plate' song (don't ask)
Missing 3 weeks whilst we sunned ourselves in Miami!
Term 3 starts in a week or two - which reminds me, I must get the cheque book out (again....)

Supermarket Twins

Up until now, we've mainly avoided the issue by doing the weekly shop online, however, over the weekend we took a trip to our local shop and found double shopping trolleys! The boys absolutely loved it in there - especially enjoying the fact that everything on the shelves was within easy grasp from their elevated position....
